knee joint disease

knee joint pain

Most commonly, this disease occurs in older patients, especially women.Joint pain caused by knee arthrosis can be explained by dystrophic changes in the cartilage that covers the inner joint surfaces of bones.First, blood circulation in the blood vessels supplying the cartilage deteriorates.The cartilage covering then begins to thin and is completely erased.The bones inside the knee joint are exposed.As a result, they rub against each other when walking, causing severe pain.

Over the years, bone growth begins to develop in the joints.They can lead to the development of deformities and the legs become crooked.

Causes of knee joint disease

Knee osteoarthritis occurs for a variety of reasons.Two forms are usually distinguished:

  • primary;
  • Secondary.

Primary knee joint disease usually occurs in older people.It happens because:

  • Metabolic disorders;
  • obesity;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • Take hormone medications.

The main form affects both knee joints at the same time and is called bilateral knee arthrosis.But in some cases, the inflammatory process first covers one knee and, after a few years, moves to the second knee.

In contrast, secondary knee arthropathy is always unilateral.He is called:

  • Heavy physical labor and sports can put stress on the right or left knee joint;
  • Trauma (ligament rupture, dislocation, bleeding within the knee joint cavity, meniscus injury, intra-articular fracture, etc.).
  • Surgery on the knee joint;
  • Joint inflammation/swelling.

Symptoms of knee joint disease

Common symptoms of knee arthritis include:

  • Severe pain in the knee when moving;
  • Knee joint dysfunction;
  • swelling of the knee joint;
  • limp;
  • joint stiffness;
  • The affected joint is unstable.

Advanced stages of the disease are also characterized by deformity (bending) of the legs.

In most cases, knee joint disease develops slowly and passes through four consecutive stages.

Grade one knee osteoarthritis is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Unexpressed pain in the knee when going up/down stairs, squatting.
  • Pain "comes on" when you start moving.
  • Restrictions on mobility.
  • When the patient "diverges," the discomfort disappears.
  • Knee pain after strenuous physical activity.
  • The knee may look healthy or may be slightly swollen.
  • Signs of synovitis (inflammation of the lining of the joint, causing fluid to begin to form within the joint) may occur.

Second-degree knee arthritis on both sides of the knee has the following symptoms:

  • The pain becomes more severe.
  • Discomfort increases dramatically when squatting and walking.
  • The pain is concentrated on the inside of the knee and gradually disappears at rest.
  • Knees creaking.
  • The joints expand and fluid begins to accumulate in them (synovitis).
  • Intra-articular fluid may fill the popliteal fossa on the back of the joint (Baker's cyst).
  • Individual joint areas feel hot to the touch.
  • Stiffness may disappear after your body warms up.
  • Changes in the shape of the leg in the knee area (bending is observed).

The following symptoms are typical of third-degree knee arthritis:

  • Pain occurs during the day and night, while resting and walking.Patients must look for positions that can reduce the severity of their pain symptoms.
  • The joints are difficult to straighten and bend.His movements are restricted.It is impossible to straighten the legs completely.
  • O- or X-shaped deformities may develop in the lower limbs.
  • The knee joint is significantly increased in size and deformed.Severe synovitis was observed.
  • The patient's gait becomes unsteady and shaky, and he must use a cane/crutches or require outside assistance when moving.

There is also fourth degree arthroarthritis of the knees.Clinically, orthopedic surgeons classify this as the third stage of the disease.This can only be determined by X-ray examination.

In the fourth degree, the articular surfaces of the bones are so deformed that there is almost no space between them, and without space movement is impossible.The patient suffers from ongoing pain.

If you notice similar symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.It is easier to prevent disease than to deal with its consequences.

Diagnosis of knee arthrosis

Diagnosis of the disease involves questioning the patient, examining the inflamed joint, checking its size and assessing mobility.If knee joint disease is suspected, the orthopedic surgeon will use an instrumental approach:

  • X-rays.In knee arthropathy, X-rays show narrowing of the cracks, thinning of the bone tissue and its subchondral compaction, ossification of the articular cartilage.Osteophytes—bone growths along the edges of cartilage—may be present.
  • Ultrasound diagnosis of the knee joint.
  • Arthroscopy.During the study, surgeons insert a special tiny camera attached to an arthroscope into the joint through a puncture.Images of all parts of the study area are displayed on the screen.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).It can assess the extent of damage to the knee joint.
  • Blood tests are a diagnostic aid and do not always provide a complete clinical picture.In fact, with knee joint disease, signs of inflammation in the blood may not be detectable.

Treatment of knee arthritis

drug

When treating arthritis of the knee, the following groups of drugs are used:

  • anti-inflammatory;
  • painkillers;
  • Chondroprotectant (provides repair of damaged cartilage tissue).

They come in different forms - ointments, creams, gels, tablets, capsules, intra-articular injections and intramuscular injections.

orthopedics

Orthopedic treatment of the pathology involves the use of special devices to minimize the load on the diseased joint:

  • orthopedic insoles,
  • orthotics (special rigid knee braces that limit movement of the affected joint),
  • cane.

Operation

Surgical methods are used to treat third-degree knee arthritis.Indications for endoprosthesis are:

  • uncontrollable pain,
  • Significant dysfunction of the knee and hip joints.

Implantation time is 2-3 hours.Before fitting the prosthesis, the damaged portion of the joint and the back of the kneecap are removed and the axis of the leg is aligned.If necessary, perform ligament repair.After the endoprosthesis is installed, the wound is sutured.

For the first few hours after surgery, the patient cannot feel his lower limbs due to the anesthesia.The recovery period is long - 3-4 months.

Endoprosthetic surgery is not possible if the patient has osteoporosis (weak, brittle bones).

Other ways to treat knee joint disease

For knee joint disease, the following methods can be used as auxiliary treatments:

  • manual therapy;
  • massage;
  • acupuncture;
  • leech therapy;
  • physiotherapy;
  • Exercise therapy.

Exercise therapy for knee joint disease

Exercises for arthroarthritis of the knee joints are chosen individually.Their regular implementation strengthens the muscles around inflamed joints and improves blood circulation in pathological areas.They should be performed lying on your back or sitting.

In the first few days, the duration of therapeutic exercises for arthroarthritis of the knee should not exceed 10 minutes.Gradually, the training time should be increased to half an hour.It is important to complete all movements smoothly and ensure that the pain does not increase.

Common exercises include the following:

  • Raise the straight leg to a height of 15-20 cm from the floor and hold it in this position for the longest time.
  • Raise the straight leg to a height of 15-20 cm, and then gradually lower it to the starting position.
  • Flexion and extension of the legs while sitting in a chair.

Any deep squats and long walks are contraindicated without prior consultation with an orthopedic surgeon.

Treatment characteristics of knee joint disease depend on the extent of the disease

Treatment of first-degree knee osteoarthritis

Level one of the disease is the mildest.Patients are prescribed:

  • massage.
  • Therapeutic gymnastics.
  • Physical therapy procedures.

If you are obese, losing weight is necessary.For this, special dietary habits need to be followed.

Treatment of second-degree knee osteoarthritis

Complex treatment of pathology includes:

  • Perform the exercises recommended by your therapist.
  • Take anti-inflammatory pain relievers, chondroprotectants, and introduce hyaluronic acid into the joints.
  • Phytotherapy procedures (if there are no obvious inflammatory processes).
  • Weight normalization.

Treatment of Third Degree Knee Arthropathy

Treatment of stage 3 pathology is similar to that of stage 2 disease.However, in cases where the desired results are not achieved, patients are advised to undergo surgical methods.

If we are talking about the beginning of the third degree, part of the damaged cartilage and bone growth can be removed.Doctors use an arthroscope to examine the knee joint cavity and study the extent of the problem.

Corrective osteotomies are required when areas of healthy tissue are preserved.In this surgery, the doctor corrects the shape of the bone by breaking it.He then installs a special plate that allows you to hold the limb in the correct position.

The second type of surgical treatment is endoprosthesis – surgery to replace the entire knee joint or parts of it with a prosthesis.

Treat knee arthritis with folk remedies

Traditional recipes can only give good results in the first and second stages of the disease.When the cartilage tissue is destroyed and the joints are severely deformed, there is nothing they can do.

ficus tincture

The solution is prepared according to the formula:

  • Pass the ficus leaves through a meat grinder.
  • Place in a glass container.
  • Add 100 ml vodka.
  • Cover and let sit for 3 weeks.
  • Store the prepared liquid in the refrigerator.Rub the tincture onto your joints once a day for 10 days.

clay compression

  • Place the blue/red clay into a glass bowl.
  • Dilute with water to the consistency of sour cream.
  • Apply the clay to a linen/cotton fabric about 1.5-2cm thick.
  • Great for sore joints.
  • Secure with a bandage and wrap in a towel.
  • Compress 2-3 times a day.Treatment time is 1.5 weeks.

Dandelion Tincture

  • Fill a mason jar with dandelion flowers.
  • Pour triple cologne over it.
  • Close the lid.
  • Keep in dark place for one month.
  • After the designated time, filter the tincture.Rub your knees twice a day.

Apple cider vinegar treats knee arthritis

  • Mix 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of natural honey.
  • Apply the mixture to the joint area.
  • Cover with cabbage leaves.
  • Wrap in plastic and scarf.
  • It is best to apply the compress at night.Remove the leaves after they are completely dry.The course of treatment is about 4 weeks.

Garlic with celery and lemon

  • 250 g celery, 120 g garlic, 3 lemons, chopped and mixed.Transfer to a three-liter jar and add boiling water.
  • Cover yourself with a warm blanket.
  • After cooling, take 70 ml before meals, initially once a day, and after a few days - 2-3 times a day.

Diet for knee arthritis

Diet for knee arthritis is designed to normalize weight, fight obesity and fill the body with nutrients.If the patient manages to lose weight, the pain becomes less noticeable as there is less stress on the joints.In this case, you should not starve or follow a monoculture diet.Nutrition should be balanced.

Protein helps restore cartilage within joints.Patients can get them from lean meats, cheese, cottage cheese, fish, lentils, beans and buckwheat.Aspic made from bone broth is useful for arthritis because it contains a lot of collagen.

Carbohydrates should be obtained by eating vegetables and fruits.The fat should be mainly vegetable fat.A small amount of butter is allowed.Vitamins, especially B vitamins, are important in improving a patient's condition.They are found in eggs, beans, bananas, dairy products, cabbage, nuts and lentils.

If you have knee arthritis, you should not drink alcohol.Not only does it have a negative impact on the entire body, it also increases appetite, which is undesirable.

Risks of Knee Arthritis

With grade one and grade two knee joint disease, we are not talking about disability.The third stage of the disease can be incapacitating, when joint function is completely lost and movement becomes impossible without assistance.

It should be understood that knee joint disease is a progressive, chronic pathology.To obtain a good prognosis, correct choice of medication and regular exercise are necessary.

Risk groups for knee joint disease

People at risk for knee joint disease include:

  • professional dancer;
  • athlete;
  • Builders, loaders, miners;
  • People with a genetic predisposition;
  • Obese people;
  • poor posture;
  • suffered a broken bone;
  • Deformity of ligamentous joint apparatus;
  • Suffering from hormonal, rheumatoid and metabolic diseases.

Prevent knee joint disease

To reduce your risk of developing knee osteoarthritis, follow these recommendations:

  • engage in physical exercise;
  • Avoid excessive physical activity;
  • control weight;
  • Seek qualified medical help for injuries, joints, and inflammatory conditions;
  • Do not get too cold (if there is a problem, it is recommended to wear thermal knee pads);
  • Drink 2 liters of water per day;
  • Wear comfortable shoes;
  • Avoid stressful situations.
